Extreme Language Teaching (ExLT) is an online venture that I set up with Lindsay Clandfield. At the ExLT website, teachers can download a series of ‘Adventures’ and eBooks in which their students learn English for more unusual and extreme specific purposes.

English for the Zombie Apocalypse

Robert Campbell & Lindsay Clandfield

Communication is a vital skill when you're facing the end of the world. And when the zombie apocalypse comes, chances are people will be communicating in English. This e-book contains all the essential language your students need to work with others and face the undead. There are units on calling for help, scavenging, meeting other survivors and most importantly not giving up hope. The book also comes with audio tracks of all the dialogues, and a special A-Z feature that provides all the essential vocabulary you need when confronted with hordes of zombies.

Over the course of ten units, students follow the adventures of three people as they struggle to survive a zombie apocalypse. Each of the ten units focuses on a specific area of language or vocabulary.

Each unit begins with an introductory activity that establishes a situation. Students are asked to make a decision based on the situation. Students then listen to a short scene to find out which decision the characters made in the same situation. They then follow a script of the scene and listen for information that’s missing from the script. After listening and repeating key phrases from the scene, students interpret their own scene using the language and content of the unit to help them. The book, which is suitable for intermediate levels, also includes an A to Z of the Zombie Apocalypse.

'It is fun, the students will love it, and it may be useful one day! (But I hope not!)'

English for the Alien Invasion

Robert Campbell & Lindsay Clandfield

They're coming! English for the Alien Invasion is an e-book for learning to communicate in English during an alien invasion of Earth. You’ll find units to help your students initialize contact, describe an alien ship, call for reinforcements, meet an alien leader, and escape from an alien abduction. Our hope is that this manual will help us all be more prepared to meet other life forms.

Each of the ten units focuses on a specific area of language or vocabulary. The units begin with an introductory activity that helps to establish a situation. Students then listen to a short scene and complete a task. They follow a script of the scene and listen for information that’s missing from the script. After listening and repeating key phrases from the scene, students complete a related task, using the language and content of the unit to help them.

The book is suitable for elementary level learners of English, and comes with audio and a set of alien invasion flashcards to equip your learners with all the key terms they need to survive.

ExLT Adventures

The ExLT ‘adventures’ are classroom activities related to extreme language themes. They are either presented as A5 size slides which can be projected onto a whiteboard and printed out, or as PowerPoint presentations.

The Island is one of the ‘adventures’ for intermediate students and higher. Students role play a series of situations as they are shipwrecked on a mysterious desert island. They create a character and go through a series of short roleplay speaking activities. These include discussions on what to do and how to survive, an expedition to make a map of the island, recovering supplies from a sunken ship and recording a distress call. The materials include role cards, event cards and the slideshow (Powerpoint) complete with images, animations, instructions and sound effects.

For more information, visit the ‘Adventures’ section at the ExLT website.
